Damn, I don’t want to go down to the Tom Woods campaign event tonight.
Had about 10 beers last night. Stayed up past 1. Got up early and took my kid to school. Later I’ve got to go to class and then I’ve got a bit of work.
So no…I’m not too enthusiastic about going to a 6 PM campaign event for a guy that has little-to-no chance of winning…not only the primary, but the general against Gianforte, too.
But I’ll probably still drag my ass down there, take some photos, and get you some info.
Boy, that’s a boost to campaigns!
At this point they’re muddling around in the dark, hoping for whatever media attention they can get, hoping to hell they can raise a few thousand dollars this month to keep the effort going.
They’ll be getting no money from me. I made just over $1,800 this month, which is about $300 less than last month. On top of it we have Christmas coming up. That means I need to both pay the rent and bills, and also come up with money to buy people presents.
I told you how poor people view Christmas 3 years ago.
And what does Tom Woods want Christmas to be?
Hard to say. The guy was born in ’61, ran for the legislature in ’12, won with 63% of the vote, then won again in ’14 with 95% of the vote.
It’s nice running in the cities, isn’t it?
Dems do well there. Tom – should he get the nod – will do well in Missoula, too. But how will he do everywhere else?
Not good, if you ask me. But then, no one with a ‘D’ behind their name is going to do good outside the safe zones in the city.
Tom is trying to get out to those areas, listening to voters to try and figure out what they want and care about. I can’t help but think this is a huge wake-up call to Tom, and people like him.
Wow…people outside the safe zones in the city actually don't care about what I do!
That’s gotta be frustrating.
Tom figures that student loan debt, helping Indians, shoring-up Obamacare, and limiting corporate influence are the issues that wide swaths of Montana cares about.
The swift kick in the gut he’ll get when he realizes these actually aren’t the issues that people care about surely’s gonna hurt!
I heard a good story about when Pat Williams was running for U.S. House for the first time.
It was press conference time, and Pat got a lot of questions about a lot of different things. No matter what the question was, however, he kept steering it back to one issue:
Jobs.
‘We need jobs. I’m gonna create more jobs. Jobs just aren’t good enough. We need to do better on jobs.’
One of the reporters leans over to another reporter and says, ‘Is this guy serious? Sounds like a broken record here!’
‘Sounds like a guy that’s gonna get elected,’ the other reporter replied.
You can’t stay on message if you don’t have a message.
It’ll be interesting to see what Tom Woods’ message is tonight, and whether it differs from the other half-d0zen candidates in the race.
Until then, here are a few questions that I’d be interested to see Tom answer:

- Democrats don’t care about you and your race – they care about Jon Tester and his race. The money will reflect this. How do you win in that kind of ‘no-support, toxic-for-you’ atmosphere?’
- What’s one of your favorite movies?
- In my experience, you can knock on about 50 doors between 7 and 9 PM. That comes out to about 3,000 doors a month, or 36,000 doors in a year. We know based on studies that this is the most effective method to get votes. What are your thoughts on this method?
- Many politicians think if they raise the most money, they’ll win. Much of that money is used to assault us with inbox spam, junk mail, radio garbage, and endless-TV ads. What are your thoughts on this method?
- Who was one of your best teachers?
- We recently learned about Al Franken groping women. What are your thoughts on this?
- We recently learned about Roy Moore propositioning 14-year-old girls back in the ‘70s. What are your thoughts on this?
- Should you win next year, you’ll be in Congress when the next Farm Bill comes up. Just $14 billion a year is given to farmers while $80 billion is given to food stamp recipients. The latter is a sticking-point for Republicans in Congress, and could lead to the 2019 Farm Bill failing. What will you do to ensure this bill passes?
