Why do you have to be so difficult!
Anyone that’s been reading this Montana Blog for awhile knows that I’ve been plugging away on my third volume of Montana history. The book is tentatively titled Miners and Magnates, but I’m wondering if that’s even a good title.
Mainly I’m just sick of working on the whole thing.
Why? There are three main reasons.
- First, the Battle of Little Bighorn. I’ve gotten just about everything on the Great Sioux War finished except for this stupid battle. Yes, I’m calling it stupid. The reason? There’s too much stuff on it. Really, I think I need to do what I did with Lewis and Clark in the first book and just gloss over it.
- Next, Butte. Once again, there’s so much written on Butte’s mining history that it seems too daunting to even start. Like before, perhaps I just need to gloss over some things while focusing on the main actors. After all, the first two volumes of my Montana History series take a biographical approach.
- Finally, politics. Yep, there’s a lot of politicians, territorial governors, legislators, and other clowns that populated Montana from 1870 to 1900. I haven’t started on this much yet, but I should; I like writing about it.
Pretty much it just feels like I’m crawling along on this book, which never seems as though it’s going to get done. Maybe I should go up to the Montana Historical Society and do some research there.
All in all, I’m pretty confident this book will be out sometime next month. I just need to yell at it for a bit first.
“Damn you, book – get finished!”
There, now I can get back to work on it.
