If you go to the Sanders County Montana Sheriff’s Office Facebook page you’ll see a post discussing Jake Ryan.
Who the hell’s that?
He’s one of the guys that was involved with the Malheur Wildlife Refuge standoff in Oregon.
Personally, I find that story to be a huge waste of time that does nothing to make my life better, or anyone’s life better.
It does give partisan hacks a lot of fuel to add to their fires, however.
How it relates to Montana is that we have militias, they don’t like the feds, and they’ve convinced local law enforcement and local elected officials to feel the same way.
That’s can easily lead to trouble in situations like the one developing now.
Ryan’s name was made public on Monday by a judge in Oregon. Before that it was being concealed “in an indictment filed March 8 in U.S. District Court in Oregon.”
At that point Ryan got spooked, went into hiding. If he’s in Montana the easy thing is for the sheriff to go arrest him.
Alas, in that area of Montana we have a lot of militias.
I don’t want to say nutcases, but their behavior often borders on that. Their talk almost always qualifies as that.
Nonetheless, they have some push and pull in that area of the state.
Sanders County Sheriff Tom Rummel got the arrest warrant for Ryan a week ago.
Despite that, he says Ryan isn’t in the area and he’s doing nothing more than working toward a “peaceful resolution” with the family.
The family is the reason Ryan’s name was concealed, as they’d found out about the indictment early and got a lawyer. That threw a wrench into the feds’ plans.
What I’m hearing out of Sanders County is that the Militia call is going out for the sheriff to stand up to the feds on the basis of the “Sheriff's First” legislation.
That legislation was supported by Montana Senator Jennifer Fielder and the far right of Sanders County.
That far right includes the leader of the Militia of Montana at Noxon, John Trochmann, who was one of Fielder's supporters and served as her political adviser at one point.
In addition to pushing for the transfer of ownership of federal lands in Montana to the State, the far right is trying very hard to takeover Sanders County using the Tea Party umbrella as their cover.
The Sheriff in Sanders County is a Sheriff's First advocate and aligned with the far-right movement there.
These recent developments are just the tip of the iceberg. I expect we’ll hear more soon.
