No one on President Reagan’s staff wanted him to use the language he used.
It was 1987. Reagan said it anyways:
“Mr. Gorbachev...tear down this wall.”
It was a powerful statement. 30 years ago this weekend, that wall came down.
The people around Reagan advised him not to give that speech.
“The speech was also a source of considerable controversy within the Reagan administration itself, with several senior staffers and aides advising against the phrase, saying anything that might cause further East-West tensions or potential embarrassment to Gorbachev, with whom President Reagan had built a good relationship, should be omitted. American officials in West Germany and presidential speechwriters, including Peter Robinson, thought otherwise.”
32 years later and we look back on that speech as one of the proudest moments of our country.
As we should.
Reagan demonstrated what a leader should be like - strong, independent, and unafraid to say the things that need to be said.
It’s usually not popular at the time, but as time goes on and we look back, we realize it was the right thing to do.
Trump isn’t popular right now, but he’ll win again next year.
35% of Democrats think that Trump will win next year, as well as 51% of Independents and 85% of Republicans.
Like Gianforte here in Montana, the race is Trump’s to lose.
I don’t think he’s going to make a lot of mistakes. Of course, he could shoot someone on the street and his supporters wouldn’t leave him.
And I think he’s right.
America is incredibly lucky to have Trump, an outsider that lambasts the politicians we’ve been hating for years.
I mean, for years we’ve been saying Washington is broken...but then when someone comes along and says the same and calls out the politicians profiting from that broken system, and...we get upset?
Why?
Why are we so angry that we have a man with the balls to call out the corrupt establishment every...single...day?!?
It’s because we’re weak. America is a weak country.
Oh...you don’t think so? Well, when was the last time we won a fight?
1945.
We haven’t won a fight in 74 years, and the only reason we won that one is because the Russians did half the work.
We of course took full credit for winning that fight, and the relationship between American and Russia has been shit ever since.
We’re putting up walls between us.
Hopefully one day, those with cooler heads will come along and tear ‘em down.
It’ll happen. It just takes time...time for those in power to die, and their kids to take over.
It’s coming.
