The young Bullock staffer that got fired this week?
He’s got it bad.
His future is ruined.
Consider how Google views him:
A big problem is that he has a rather uncommon name. Consider the other Bullock staffer that got fired.
His name is a bit more common, so Google doesn’t dig his grave on the first go-round. You have to put something like ‘Montana’ after his name:
Those articles aren’t going away.
Washington Times...New York Times...the Missoulian - no, those articles will stay up forever...forever tarnishing these men’s names.
I went ahead and deleted the posts I put up a few days ago about Bullock’s staffer.
It’s not my job to ruin his life. He did that himself.
Still, in a few years when the dust settles and potential employers look him up on Google...they’re not gonna find my site.
They will find those other major publications, however, and chances are good they won’t hire this young man because of that.
It’s not my job to ruin his life. He did that himself.
He did it with social media.
My, what a poison that is...social media.
And what a poison Google is as well.
The good news is that Google is based on search results, so with time these stories - while not going away - will go down in the SERP (Search Engine Results Page).
That means that in a year or two they won’t be on Google’s page 1, but maybe page 2 and then later on, page 3.
I know this from experience.
Five years ago I wrote a rather long blog post about the Illuminati. I mentioned Judaism in that post.
Don Pogreba over at MT Post read what I wrote and decided to write his own post, calling me anti-semitic.
For many years that post of his showed up on page 1 of Google’s search results.
So for any potential employers typing my name into Google, they’d pretty quickly come away with the assumption that I hate folks of a certain religious persuasion.
But time goes on.
When you type my name into Google now, you won’t see that article of Don’s at all.
But then I never had big time publications write about me, just nobodies in Helena. Bullock’s staffers aren’t so lucky.
Time will go on, but those toxic search results will remain.
I feel for ‘em.
I feel for all the young people in this country that are wasting their lives away on social media, and squandering their future as well.
We’ve all heard the stories of potential employers finding party pictures on social media, and not hiring because of it.
When will we realize the poison social media is?
I think the answer is obvious - after it’s too late.
