I’m rectifying that mistake today by talking about JOE Team-13.
This book is a real action-packed romp. We start out with some team-building, getting all the main G.I. Joe members together that we’ll need for this series. But don’t worry – each character gets a page or two and things are snappy and fast.
After that we head to the Joe base, or at least where the attacks from Book 1, The Dreadnoks, took place. And guess what? Another attack comes, this time from Tomax and Xamot’s Crimson Guard troops.
What the hell is going on here? Who knows? Certainly not the Joes. They find themselves in a huge firefight, and we see some great heroics from Snake Eyes – and some real ass kickin’!

11 – Into the Fray
Snake Eyes charged forward, his machine gun firing. Crimson Guardsmen either fell back under his onslaught or fell to it.
Behind him Stalker was also mowing them down, the wide arcs from his own machine gun mopping up what Snake Eyes missed. Still, the tide seemed unrelenting, and the Crimson Guardsmen were already adjusting to the assault.
“They’re formin’ up!” Stalker yelled over the battlefield sounds. “Take cover in that ditch!”
Snake Eyes nodded, seeing Stalker’s arm pointed toward a small depression at the runway’s edge. They were both soon down in it, and quickly realized the Crimson Guardsmen were closing in. Stalker didn’t need to see his friend’s face to know that he was frowning.
~~~
“They’re pinned!” Grunt yelled.
“I see them!” Hawk shouted back, and pointed out the small ditch Stalker and Snake Eyes were huddled in. The fire over their heads was so bad now that the two JOES could only duck for cover.
“We’ve got to break ‘em out, but how!” Short-Fuze said.
“If we can get over to–”
Zap’s words were cut-off and the bazooka nearly fell from his hands as bullets hit the ground nearby and he leaped for cover.
“Pull back!” Grand Slam yelled.
Grunt was about to argue, but another wave of bullets sent him to the ground and he thought otherwise. They pulled back behind the Jeeps.
“Where’s Scarlett!” Hawk shouted when they were all back.
The others looked around, eyes wide, and that’s when they heard the jet overhead and a rumbling nearby.
~~~
“Go Scarlett!” Rock ‘n Roll shouted from atop the Self-Propelled Cannon, or Slugger as it was called. He’d seen one in the hangar earlier, and wondered if he’d have a chance to try it out.
“Here goes!” he said, and pushed down on the firing button.
The Slugger jumped back as the 175mm howitzer let out a deafening roar. A few moments later the shell exploded right in the middle or a cluster of Crimson Guardsmen that’d nearly been on Snake Eyes and Stalker.
“Woo-hoo!” he shouted, pumping his fist into the air.
“Alright, Rock ‘n Roll!” Scarlett yelled from inside the cockpit of the Skystriker XP-14F fighter jet. Like Rock ‘n Roll, she’d seen one in the hangar earlier and had just been dying to give it a spin.
She angled the fighter to the right and then straightened it out. Below her was a smoking crater from the Slugger, and Crimson Guardsmen in two large groups rushing by it on either side.
“Take this!” she said, and clamped her thumb down on the firing button.
Two Sidewinder missile shot out, each heading for the two groups. Just to be on the safe side, Scarlett sent out two Sparrow missiles right on their tail. The Crimson Guardsmen never knew what hit them. One moment they were rushing forth, the next there were two more craters in the field and body parts lying everywhere. Those were quickly incinerated when the two Sparrow missiles struck a few seconds later.
“Not done yet!” Scarlett shouted with a smile, then punched the firing button again.
The Skystriker’s final missiles shot out, two Phoenix’s that struck the broadside of the two transport trucks. There was red clothes and red blood everywhere.
