Those are the words I said to my wife when I started this site and its two main blogs two years ago today, on March 4, 2013.
I was living in Shenzhen, China, at the time, and teaching kids English. I remember the exact evening, after work, and coming out to the kitchen.
“I think I just made a big mistake.”
At the time I was overworked as a teacher and had little money. Plus I was trying to work on several other writing projects, including daily blogging on my ESL website. Starting a new website – with two blogs no less! – was a huge mistake.
But it wasn’t.
Over the next month I made it work, don’t ask me how. Each night I’d come home from work and put up an article on my Writing Blog and my Montana Blog. By the end of the month I bundled those all those posts into two different books, Tribes and Trappers and Write Now! They’ve since sold 205 copies between them.
So maybe it wasn’t a mistake, but it certainly was hard work. But I did it, and I continued to do it and now here we are. The Writing Blog has more than 470 articles and the Montana Blog nearly 100. And besides that, I’ve gone from having 6 books to more than 50.
There are still very few comments but I have a lot more traffic, about 500 people a day, on average. And having a website and a blog hasn’t really distracted from writing books. Indeed, I think it’s spurred me to write more.
