Writing an article is not the most difficult thing in the world, even if you want to make it out to be. I do it each and everyday for people all over the world, and they’re quite happy with the content I give them. Whether your freelance article writing or writing a newspaper article, there are a few things to keep in mind that will make your article interesting, informative, and, most importantly, fun and easy to read.
- Length: If you know how much you’re supposed to write, or just how much you want to write, you’ll be doing better than a lot of writers who just start and have no idea when to stop. If your aim is for a 500-word article, you’ll need to fill up about a page on MS Word. Just adding 250 words, however, can often lead to two pages. Knowing what you want to say in that amount of page space is important, and knowing an exact number to stop at makes article writing easier.
- Headings: I always break my articles up into something that’s easy on the eyes. I group sentences into blocks and usually have 2 to 3 of these under one heading. This gives the reader a lot of information about what your article writing is about with just one quick glance. It also makes it easier for me to write the article. If you have 3 to 4 headings before you start out, you can skip about and write as you please, then tie it all together when you write your intro and closing paragraphs, which is sometimes best to do last.
- Facts: Nothing makes your article writing stand out from another’s like new and interesting facts. And really, it’s not all that hard to go hunt down some proper nouns or dates. When I write articles, I’ll often look at other articles on my subject. It’s called research. I’ll find facts, but then I’ll find facts about those facts. A good example is when I do travel articles. Whenever I see the name of a beach of national park, I’ll find out when it was first used or opened, how large it is, and perhaps how many visitors come each year. This doesn’t take that long, and you can get a sentence out of each of those points if you really want to. That’s another block, and it separates you from other article writing on the same subject. The backlinks you can get will also make your article writing stand out.
- Language: The biggest thing that’s going to separate you from all the other article writing out there is how you choose to use your voice. Everyone can say that Lamington National Park has 500 waterfalls, so if your article writing job is on that, you need to find new and fun ways to say it. “Towering walls of rock become inundated as Coomera Falls sends its cascading water pouring over their sides. And that’s just one of the more than 500 waterfalls you’ll be seeing when you visit Lamington National Park.” See, make it fun, make it snappy, but never make it dull.
