Are my days finished as a Montana political podcaster? After going about a week with no posts it sure seems that way, doesn’t it? Honestly, I think my days very well may be, and for two reasons. First, I don’t have any money. Well, I do, but I just can’t justify spending $70 for a yearly membership to PodOmatic, which is the service I use for these podcasts. Alright, I could spend $9.99 each month for a year, but really, do I want to? The second reason is that no one is listening to these damn things. Well, that’s not exactly true either, it’s just that the potential value of these things is questionable at best and nonexistent at worst. Last night I wrote a post and it got 9 likes on Facebook. Yea! Now you have to figure that all of the political podcasts I’ve done in the past month – since losing the election really – have gotten maybe 7 likes and I think a good 3 of those, or 42%, were likes from myself. That’s a poor showing indeed, and probably why I’ll go back to print form. Maybe I just needed to get some post-election anger out, and speaking to no one is a good way to do that. Notice I didn’t use talking to myself because that could imply insanity and I don’t want to go all Eagleton on anyone. Anyways, I think I’ll take some of my pent-up anger that I routinely get after reading the Missoulian and certain Montana blogs and just channel that into this blog. So far I’ve got 47 written posts on this blog and another 35 podcasts. That’s a total of 82 posts since the tail-end of January, not a bad showing indeed. Someone over on MT Cowgirl mentioned that I go for quantity over quality, or some such thing, and I think there’s some truth to that. Mainly I don’t want to leave people hanging like the other blogs of the state do. Hell, it doesn't do me much good...I’m not even on anyone’s blog roll. What can I say, I’m a threat and I know it. A threat to what? Why, mediocrity and laziness! MT Cowgirl routinely goes days without new content while Intelligent Discontent has gone without 4 to 5 days this week. I did run into some interesting “new” blogs this week in the Montana blogosphere, and they’re listed here for the curious:
The running joke amongst the blogging literati of Montana is that you can go about a month and then you’re finished. It’s really hard to refute this as most blogs do indeed go about a month, then get into a habit of posting once a quarter, then year, then nothing. Just like the Montana landscape, the Montana blogosphere is littered with the cast-off corpses of failed and forgotten enterprises. Blogs are just another example in a long, long line of high ideals and can-do attitudes worn down by the harsh realities of the terrain and environment. Blogging isn’t easy, and doing so in Montana can be especially rough. Either you’re being attacked by wolves nipping at your heels in the commenting section or plagued by a drought of interest. My blog is a fine example – no one ever comments. But you persevere, knowing that eventually you’ll strike some color and the hanger’s-on will start flooding in. After that it’s just loading up a wagon and riding off into the sunset. In this episode we'll explore:
