I like Tom Winter.
Oh, I’ve lambasted him in the past for his willingness to take taxpayer money for his townhome projects for rich people, but I still like him.
Maybe it’s his audacity.
We see this with his recent topless photo. Pretty ballsy, despite so many saying a woman could never do the same, perhaps even a Republican.
One thing I do know is that we’d never allow a Republican to pose with a Confederate flag.
Something like that is typically a death knell for a campaign.
I wonder how that’ll work for Winter’s campaign, considering he’s a Democrat.
You see, Winter is paying Michael Rafshoon $2,081 every two weeks to help run his campaign.
Rafshoon is the finance director for Winter. He’s not the only staffer - Blake Cilwick is getting $840 while Rebecca Mathison is getting $230 - but Rafshoon is the only one to pose with the Confederate flag.
That’s the flag that Georgia flew from 1956 to 2001. Controversy forced the state to get a new flag, which they had until 2003, and then they found their current flag.
Can you imagine if a Republican candidate for Congress hired a staffer, and this image came to light?
But this isn't a Republican. This is a Democrat.
Please remember that Montana Democrats cannot stand anything that reminds us of Confederate history. It's why they remove 100-year-old fountains.
Montana Democrats will remove a fountain that points to the Confederacy; will they remove a candidate for hiring a staffer that does the same?
Rafshoon grew up in Georgia. He worked as an intern for the Carter Center (likely because an older relative did). He’s young, and he made a drunken mistake that his political opponents now want to capitalize on. They chose my site to do that.
Montanans Against Outside Money sent me the email, with the image and the message: “Concerned citizens have found that Tom Winter's Finance Director Michael Rafshoon not only brings in outside money and interests into state elections but poses with Confederate Georgia flag.”
This group feels threatened by Winter.
I personally don’t believe this group is the Williams campaign. Williams has $811,000 cash on hand, while Winter has just $110,000. We knew his campaign was done when the most recent FEC finance reports came out.
Williams is already winning, and I feel she would have relayed that message to her staffers.
No, she’s not to blame for this.
Someone else is threatened by Winter, and wants to take him out. I wonder who that is. A good bet is the hard, hard left...the Bernie boys. Winter overstepped his bounds with the topless pic. People want him to pay.
What I do know is that this image of his campaign finance director won’t get any play in the media, and the candidate sure won’t address it.
It’ll go away, and people will forget (if they ever noticed in the first place).
Truth is, Winter never stood a chance against Williams to begin with, and we all knew it.
Winter is making someone nervous, however. I wonder who that is.
And I wonder who'd care.
